Children and Families Research Fund – 2020/2021 funding round

Applications for current funding are welcome before Wednesday 16 September 2020.

The fund is open to government agencies, non-government organisations, academics, and public and independent research organisations with demonstrated research capability.

Research proposals must constitute discrete projects, make use of Growing Up in New Zealand (GUiNZ) data and be completed within 12 months from the date GUiNZ data is accessed.

There are two categories:

  • Standard Research Grant: Up to $125,000 per proposal. Projects will demonstrate strong research capability, experience with working with longitudinal data, and involve close collaboration with government policy professionals.
  • New User Grant: Up to $75,000 per proposal. This category is focused on increasing the diversity of people using Growing Up in New Zealand (GUiNZ) data, and must be led by a Principal Investigator who has not previously conducted research using GUiNZ data.

This year, in addition to earlier data sets, data from the children aged eight years old (released in August 2020) will also be available to Children and Families Fund applicants for the first time.

The Eight-Year Data Collection Wave was completed in January 2019. The eight-year data sets are the largest set of anonymised data that GUiNZ has ever produced and includes the voices and perspectives of the cohort children themselves for the first time.

Applicants must engage with social sector agencies to maximise the policy relevance of their proposed research. We encourage researchers and policy professionals to co-develop research proposals.

All details about how to apply are in the Application Pack, available on the Government Electronic Tender System (GETS) website.

Applications must be submitted on the GETS website by 1pm, Wednesday 16 September 2020.

Application assessment and selection

here is a two-stage application process.

The funding application submitted to MSD (via the GETS website) are assessed by an independent selection panel with expertise across the research and policy sectors who are able to assess the methodology, rigour and relevance of proposals to the Fund objectives.

The panel will assess the applications based on criteria derived from the fund objectives:

  • increase the number of high-quality, high-impact, policy-relevant research projects using GUiNZ data
  • facilitate partnerships between government and researchers and foster evidence-informed policy and decision-making
  • build sector capacity for research with longitudinal data, including with non-academic and early career researchers
  • support use of GUiNZ data to meet the evidence needs of Māori and Pacific peoples, and to understand, promote and further whānau wellbeing
  • increase the impact of funded research through effective research dissemination and application.

Applicants shortlisted by the assessment panel must then submit an external data access application to the GUINZ Data Access Committee (DAC).

More information about accessing GUiNZ data is available at:

Applicants are welcome to discuss potential proposals with the fund administrators.

Email researchfund@msd.govt.nz

More information about the study and the datasets is available at www.growingup.co.nz. Applicants can contact the GUINZ team if they have questions about the data: contact@growingup.co.nz
