Benefit and public housing system modelling

The Ministry uses modelling to understand what services provide better outcomes for people and to forecast demand on services we fund or provide.

Modelling of the benefit and housing systems provides the Ministry with a range of insights that, along with other information, support decisions about policy and funding priorities, the types of services we provide clients, new services we might trial and to inform how we design our operations.

To undertake the modelling we use our understanding of what’s currently occurring and has occurred in the past in terms of service demand and results, to inform an understanding of what is likely to happen in the future. For example, modelling can tell us how long we expect current clients to rely on our services and supports, and what those supports are likely to be as they move through the benefit or housing system.
