Better Later Life - Implementing the Strategy - Budget 2022

We’re continuing the implementation of the Better Later Life – He Oranga Kaumātua 2019 to 2034 strategy, including funding actions from the Better Later Life Action Plan He Mahere Hohenga 2019-2024.

Government is investing $3.103 million over four years to continue implementing the Better Later Life – He Oranga Kaumātua 2019 to 2034 strategy and its Action Plan He Mahere Hohenga 2021-2024 through three priority actions to encourage digital inclusion, senior entrepreneurship, and shared housing.

This initiative will provide Office for Seniors (MSD) with the capacity to continue implementing the Better Later Life – He Oranga Kaumātua 2019 to 2034 strategy, including funding actions from the Better Later Life Action Plan He Mahere Hohenga 2019-2024.

  • In New Zealand, the number of people aged 65+ is increasing, as are issues around housing, employment, and social connection. Many older people are digitally excluded, experience uncertainty in employment over the age of 50, and some do not have access to safe and affordable housing.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified these issues, highlighting the importance of investing in implementing the Better Later Life - He Oranga Kaumātua 2019 to 2034 strategy.

Actions included will help to increase the wellbeing of older people by removing barriers to digital inclusion, as well as piloting initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship, and home sharing for older people.

  • The initiative aims to help remove barriers to digital inclusion, contribute to enhancing the financial wellbeing of older people through work, and enable older people to age in place by providing an alternative affordable housing option – home sharing.
  • Funding will provide digital literacy training and support; training, business coaching and mentoring to help establish sustainable businesses; and develop shared housing service design, ongoing engagement, and monitoring.
