Equitable Transitions Strategy
The Government wants New Zealand to move to a low-emissions economy. This is part of their action to address climate change. The transition to a low emissions future presents opportunities as well as challenges and the Government wants this to be fair for everyone.
Background
New Zealand's emissions reduction plan sets out the direction for climate action over the next 15 years.
Part of this plan is to transition to a low emissions economy (reduce greenhouse gas emissions).
The Government wants to ensure that any changes made to reduce our emissions are fair for all New Zealanders – creating an "equitable transition".
This work is being led by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
The goal is to develop an Equitable Transitions Strategy. A draft Strategy will be published in June 2023 and a final Strategy published in June 2024.
Have your say
There are 2 ways you can have your voice heard on ensuring New Zealand’s transition to a low-emissions future is fair:
- complete the 10-minute survey on MBIE's website. It will ask about the transition issues that are most important to you and any ideas that you have (the survey is available in English and te reo Māori and is open until April 2023)
- take part in online and in-person workshops in early 2023. If you'd like to be involved, you can register your interest with MBIE.
