Supporting more disabled people in their communities – Budget 2022

Increasing funding for community-based services will contribute to better wellbeing outcomes for disabled people

Government is investing $11 million to support disabled people to participate in and contribute to their wider community.

This initiative will expand existing community-based services for disabled people and will allow more disabled people to access the services they require.

  • All of the funding from this initiative will go to non-government organisations (NGOs) to provide an additional 370 contracted Community Participation places a year in 2023/24. A total of over 10,000 places from July 2023 on.
  • The Community Participation services support disabled people to reach their goals and aspirations within their local communities. Models of delivery range from traditional centre based congregative services to minimal support for people who are largely independent in their communities.
  • More access to appropriate supports helps disabled people live everyday lives in everyday places and aligns with the principles of Enabling Good Lives.
  • Addressing this need will support the aims of wider disability reforms and contribute to better wellbeing outcomes for disabled people.
  • The services will be relevant to the needs and interests of more disabled people, including those turning 65 who were previously ineligible.
