Supporting holistic whānau-centred services – Budget 2022

We’re continuing our support for Kāinga Whānau Ora to keep working with whānau in need.

Government is investing $2.4 million to support Te Tihi, an alliance of integrated housing, education and social services for whānau in Palmerston North and Whanganui.

This initiative funds the continuation of the Kāinga Whānau Ora programme for a further year. Kāinga Whānau Ora is a collective impact Crown-Maori initiative by Te Tihi o Ruahine Whānau Ora Alliance (Te Tihi) comprising nine iwi / Māori providers in partnership with local NGOs and government agencies.

  • This initiative will see up to 300 whānau receive holistic, integrated, wraparound services in a programme delivered in partnership with iwi, NGOs and private sector partners.

Kāinga Whānau Ora delivers holistic whānau-centred services to whānau in Palmerston North and Whanganui. Funding ensures that te ao Māori values and practices form a core part of the way that integrated housing and social services are delivered to participating whānau.

  • Kāinga Ora has four key collective goals:
    • All whānau live in structurally safe, warm, dry homes.
    • Pathways to education, training and employment opportunities are provided
    • Whānau are supported to live in safe and loving relationships free from violence.
    • Partner organisations achieve positive system change.
