Supporting children and whānau through KickStart Breakfast - Budget 2021

We are investing to provide healthy school breakfasts for children through the KickStart Breakfast programme.

Funding for at least 36,000 children to have healthy breakfast meals every day at school over the next four years.

Government is investing $5.064 million over the next four years to provide healthy breakfast meals for at least 36,000 children every day at school.

  • KickStart Breakfast is a partnership between the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), Sanitarium and Fonterra. MSD covers the breakfast and administration costs.
  • Providing healthy, nutritious breakfast meals supports children’s participation and engagement at school.

This funding will help to relieve financial pressure on families, and support children’s participation and engagement at school.

  • This initiative will help to relieve financial pressure in communities, including Māori and Pacific families.
  • This initiative contributes to reducing child poverty and supports communities to be food secure.
