Partnering with KidsCan to support children and whānau - Budget 2021
We are investing to support up to 70,000 school-aged children through the Ministry of Social Development’s partnership with KidsCan.
Funding for 17,500 warm raincoats a year for the next four years will support school attendance and child wellbeing.
Government is investing $1.4 million over the next four years to provide 17,500 warm raincoats yearly for school-aged children over the next four years in partnership with KidsCan.
- We know that on wet days children are more absent from school because they don’t have suitable wet weather clothing. This funding ensures children don’t miss out on going to school.
- This funding continues government support for KidsCan and its goal to ensure children can participate in learning and have the opportunity for a better future.
This funding will also enable KidsCan to develop and extend other programmes that provide a broader range of support.
- Over the past two years, KidsCan has distributed 33,000 raincoats yearly. In 2021, KidsCan predicts need for 65,000 raincoats.
- Each raincoat costs around $20, with KidsCan covering all shipping, warehousing and distribution costs.
