The Ministry of Social Development has welcomed the release of the Royal Commission’s final report into abuse in care, which was tabled in Parliament this afternoon.
Whanaketia – through pain and trauma, from darkness to light is arguably the largest and most complex public inquiry ever held in New Zealand, taking into account the experiences of nearly 2,400 survivors of abuse in state and faith-based institutions since 1950.
“MSD has been supporting the Royal Commission with evidence and advice, and working with other agencies on some initial improvements to our existing processes,” says Simon MacPherson, Deputy Chief Executive, Policy.
“We’re committed to listening and learning from the thousands of abuse in care survivors who found the courage to stand up and provide evidence and testimony throughout the inquiry.
“We’ll be working with other agencies to support the Crown’s response when details are announced in the coming months,” says Mr MacPherson.
