Supporting providers through COVID-19

COVID-19 is having widespread impacts on our communities and those organisations that support them. We’re working together closely so social services can continue wherever possible. This information is being updated regularly as the COVID-19 situation evolves.

Essential Social Services at Alert Level 4

On 23 March 2020, the Prime Minister announced that New Zealand would move to COVID-19 Alert Level 3 immediately and Alert Level 4 within 48 hours. Under the Government’s COVID-19 Alert Level System, Alert Level 4 allows for ‘essential businesses and those that support them’ to continue to provide the necessities of life for everyone in New Zealand.

Government agencies supporting essential social services

COVID-19 is having widespread impacts on our communities and those organisations that support them. These pages contain information for organisations that provide welfare and social services, including those funded by MSD, Oranga Tamariki, ACC, Ministry of Justice, Te Puni Kōkiri, Corrections, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education. We want to work together with you to help our communities get through COVID-19.

Ma te kotahitanga e whai kaha ai tātau – in unity we have strength.

By uniting against COVID-19, we can reduce the impacts on our communities while we eliminate the virus. The Government’s COVID-19 website is constantly being updated with information on New Zealand’s response to the pandemic and is the first place to go for information you may need.

MSD information

Maintaining provider contracts and funding

The Ministry of Social Development is providing some certainty for providers over the next six months by treating all providers fairly if their contracted delivery of services is impacted by COVID-19.

Even if affected providers have to reduce services temporarily due to COVID-19, we will seek to maintain current funding levels for the period of their contracts.

We’re encouraging all our providers to deliver services differently so they avoid direct contact with their clients (eg by using digital or virtual technologies).

Providers’ Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans can be very helpful with this.

Please contact your relationship manager to discuss any issues you are experiencing as a result of COVID-19.

COVID-19 support for social sector services and communities

In response to COVID-19, the Government is making sure essential social services continue to support communities during COVID-19 Alert Level 4.

COVID-19 business and employer support

We have a wage subsidy available to support employers affected by COVID-19.

Ongoing support for your clients

If someone you work with is experiencing hardship, we have a lot of different types of support that can help. An information sheet is available that explains what help people may be able to get.

Health information

We recognise and support the innovation shown by our providers as they keep supporting the people in their communities who need it, while staying safe and healthy themselves.

It is essential that everyone is following the Ministry of Health’s advice in response to COVID-19. Their website provides comprehensive and up to date information on how individuals and organisations can appropriately prepare and respond to developments in a nationally consistent way.

For COVID-19 health advice and information you can also contact the Healthline team (for free) on 0800 358 5453.

Keeping you updated
